INWARD CARTOGRAPHY
About | Elsa Campbell is an abstract artist based in East Boston, Massachusetts working out of a studio in the Atlantic Works artist building.
This current series entitled Inward Cartography, is inspired by maps and encrypted language. The images remotely resemble land mass shapes, and the drawing connects them as a fictional latitude/longitude marking. Abstract line evokes written language but at a remove so that it cannot be clearly deciphered. The pieces look as though they contain knowable information, but it is just out of reach. These mixed media works incorporate drawing, collage, and printmaking using ink, acrylic paint, oil stick, wax, graphite, and artist crayon. Using a variety of materials and mediums opens a loose, free way of working that incorporates mark making and gesture. |
